Performance Indicators for Airlines

Indicator Description
Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) PAX Supply
Number of passengers PAX Demand
Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK) PAX Demand
Available Freight Tone kilometers (AFTK) Freight Supply
Total Tones of cargo handled Freight Demand
Revenue Freight Tone Kilometers (RFTK) Total Output Demand
Available Tone kilometers (ATK) Total Output Supply
Total Tones of cargo handled Total Output Demand
Revenue Tone Kilometers (RTK) Total Output Demand
Load Factor PAX/freight/total tonnes
Passenger / Freight Yield Unit revenue
Unit cost Operating costs per ATK/RTK (Operating costs exclude interest payments, taxes and extraordinary items.)
Yield The average revenue collected per passenger kilometre/freight tonne kilometer or tonne kilometre of passenger & freight carried. It is a measure of the weighted average fare paid.

Calculation Formulas

ASK = number of seats available for sale on each flight x stage distance flown
AFTK = number of tonnes of capacity available for carriage of cargo on each sector of a flight x stage distance
ATK = number of tonnes of capacity available for carriage of passengers and cargo on each sector of a flight x the stage distance
RPK = number of fare-paying passengers on eachflight stage x flight stage distance
RFTK = total number of tonnes of cargo carried on each flight stage x flight stage distance
RTK = total number of tonnes of passengers and cargo carried on each flight stage x flight stage distance
Passenger Load factor (cabin load factor) = RPK / ASK x 100%
Freight Load factor (only cargo) = RFTK / AFTK x 100%
Weight Load factor (Total weight) = RTK / ATK x 100%
PAX Yield = PAX revenue on a flight / RPK
Freight Yield = total Revenue on a flight / RFTK
Unit cost = total operating costs / total ATK or total RTK
Yield = Total Revenue on a flight / RTK
